Hi,
Heya.
You basically need to bring US$ ... it's almost impossible to exchange any other currency except Euros (and those rates aren't good). Accommodation can be difficult to book over the internet ... budget places aren't often on known websites, partly because they don't have bank accounts etc. Some places also don't return emails. Honestly, there is no functional banking system at all ... I get paid either in cash (local or US$) or with $ transferred to my Canadian bank account.
When you change money, it's usually on the black market. You can maybe get 770 kyat for a US$. For changing $, you need pristine $100 USD notes. The rate is lower if the note is torn or has lines from being folded. But you need to bring smaller US notes to pay accommodation, and some govt admissions to pagodas etc are paid using USD.
Stuff is generally more expensive than you would think here. If you like to eat nice meals, it's about $50 or more per day not including transport.
The good thing is that domestic plane tickets don't go up in price and you can often get something on short notice. Bus tickets don't usually go on sale until a few days before the buses run. I would expect to spend a few days of Yangon, part of which will be spent sorting out your travel plans for the rest of the time.
Hope that's helpful
