The UK has issued a reviewed travel advisory on the Maldives urging its citizens to be cautious of "a general threat from terrorism" and possible "social unrest" in the country.
The advisory updated on December 13 and reviewed yesterday by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office states that the Maldives has been going through a period of political transition.
"You should avoid demonstrations and beware of spontaneous gatherings. A number of protests have recently taken place in Male and we are aware of reports that further demonstrations are being organised, including on 23 December," it reads.
The foreign office cautioned that terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers including tourists.
"The main types of incident for which British nationals required consular assistance in Maldives in 2009 were for lost/stolen passports and hospitalisations," the advisory said.
Demonstrations have been held in capital Male and several islands of the Maldives with several ending in violence.
The latest round of demonstrations was held in Male and some islands on Friday by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and religious organisations.
MDP demonstrated in support of "moderate Islam" while religious organisations, joined by opposition parties, rallied "in defence of Islam" condemning what they claimed were "anti-Islamic" activities carried out by the government
