A fierce fire razes down a tourist hotel in Mombasa

A fierce fire razed to the ground the posh Watamu Beach African Safaris tourist hotel in Malindi Tuesday night destroying property estimated at 300 million shillings.
The mysterious inferno, which is suspected to have emanated from the pool bar nearby, spread fast to the entire makuti-thatched hotel due to strong winds occasioned by a heavy sea breeze.
All the 300 rooms, several bars and the reception area were reduced to ashes during the 11.30 pm incident that occurred as hotel workers were preparing to close since all the guests had already left for their rooms.
However, nobody was injured during the incident, according to Malindi Police Chief Phillip Opiyo, who added that 108 guests managed to come out of their rooms unscathed.
Some of the guests were relocated to the neighboring Crystal Bay Beach Hotel while others were transferred to the African Safaris Club in Mombasa.
Opiyo lamented that the fire could not be controlled as all the three Malindi Municipal Fire Engines have been grounded for the last five months.
Opiyo said this was the third time in the last 25 years, with the first incident occurring in 1982 and the second in 1996.
The OCPD said a team of fire experts from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and the ministry of public works have been dispatched to the area with a view to establishing the cause of the fire.
The hotel manager, identified only as Mwaura told the Kenya News Agency on phone that the guests had been taken care of and there was no cause for alarm.
He dismissed the allegations that there was discontent among the hotel workers and suppliers due to non- payment of their dues.
